Levels or belts

Industrial Engineering Department, through continuing education office (EDCO), offers four levels or belts of the Lean Six Sigma Methodology: White Belt, Yellow Belt, Green Belt and Black Belt.

  • Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification (WB): It is the basic level of LSS Certification. WB certificated imply that a person has a basic understanding of the Six Sigma Methodology (strategic and tactical tools), so, he/she is aware of the need for improvement actions and can participate in teams to solve problems in a specific context within the organization. With WB certification, it is possible to understand each person’s role and responsibilities in operating systems and processes. To obtain WB, candidates must successfully complete an exam and achieve an specific  score (or higher) out of a total possible points. There is no project requirement for this level of certification.
  • Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification (YB): It is the second level of LSS Certification. YB certified imply that a person has a basic knowledge of Six Sigma, so, he/she can actively participate in projects as a core team member or carry out smaller process improvement projects using the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) methodology and to focus on eliminating non-value-added activities and reducing costs. To obtain YB, candidates must successfully complete an exam and achieve an specific  score (or higher) out of a total possible points. There is no project requirement for this level of certification.

  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification (GB): It is the third level of LSS Certification. GB certified imply that a person will be able to apply data collection and statistical tools, use of statistical software for decision-making and participate as a member of complex projects led by a Black Belt. He/she can handle projects with an emphasis on the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) model to eliminate variation and improve quality. Green Belts are agents of change. To obtain GB, candidates must successfully complete an exam and achieve an specific  score (or higher) out of a total possible points. There is a project requirement for this level of certification. It is recommended to do the project in the company where the applicant works. The student will be guided by professors and tutors with wide experience in Six Sigma process.

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification (BB): At this level of LSS Certification, a person has an advanced knowledge (philosophies and principles) of the tools and of all the DMAIC phases. This person will be able to lead and implement complex and high-impact projects, and also became a coach for the rest of the personnel. To obtain BB, candidates must successfully complete an exam and achieve an specific  score (or higher) out of a total possible points. There is a project requirement for this level of certification. It is recommended to do the project in the company where the applicant works. The student will be guided by professors and tutors with wide experience in Six Sigma process.
