Center for Optimization and Applied Probability Research Group"

COPA research group supports the decision-making processes in organizations through the analysis, design and application of Operation Research computational techniques and statistics. The objective of COPA is to contribute to scientific and technological development of Colombia. In this way, Colombia will become a leader in the Operation Research field in Latin America. To achieve this goal and to compare the progress made, COPA researchers and students participate in conferences organized for INFORMS, IIE, ALIO, EURO and IFORS, among others.

COPA research focuses on four areas of application: logistics, production systems, transportation, health, humanitarian system, and economics/finance. COPA researchers use optimization (exact and heuristic), stochastic modeling and simulation, decision theory and statistics. The group has a differential aspect and it is the computational tools development (libraries, language, computational frameworks) that facilitate the rapid development of decision support systems.

COPA researchers have achieved prestigious international awards such as: the first place in the 2014 AIMMS/MOPTA Optimization Modeling Competition (Bethlehem, PA; EEUU); the first place in the 2011 INFORMS/Railway Application Section Problem Competition (Charlotte, NC; EEUU); 2005 INFORMS/Decision Analysis Section Practice Award (San Francisco, CA; EEUU); third place in the finals 2006 IIE Technical Paper Competition, IIE Annual Conference (Orlando, FL; EEUU); the first place in the 2004 and 2006 IIE/Rockwell Software Student Simulation Competition (EEUU); Award for best article in Wireless Networks and Military Applications in the 2006 IEEE Systems and Information Engineering Design Symposium, U. of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA; EEUU), among others.

In the last five years group members have published in journals such as Transportation Science, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Computers & Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, Optimization Letters, International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of Scheduling, Operations Research Letters, Journal of Applied Probability, 4OR: A Quarterly Journal of Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing, Journal of Heuristics, Decision Support Systems, Computers & Structures, Insurance: Mathematics and Economics, Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, Automation in Construction, Building and Environment, among others.
